Sparkly, Twirly Rainbow Dress

A silvery white spaghetti strap top with sequins all over it over a ankle-length full skirt. The skirt is swirling around, making the hem rise several inches above the ground. The skirt is done in bright rainbow colors and has a swirl and leaf pattern as well as a slight sparkle. This dress just makes me smile, and I hope it does the same for you! I wanted to experiment with the way of doing sparkles that I came up with for last week’s dress. My intention was to put the sparkles on the skirt, but then I came up with the idea of making that part rainbow and doing a lot of sparkles on top of that seemed a bit much. So I only put a few sparkles on top of it, because when it comes to paperdolls that’s my idea of moderation.

Next week… well, I don’t know! I’ve promised doll #4 three weeks in a row now, I may as well make it a fourth. Iris’ Green Outfit from Broodhollow

One of the handful of webcomics I read is a relatively new one called Broodhollow, which I found via Metafilter. (A word of advice: if you want to start reading Broodhollow, start from the beginning.) Its creator, Kris Straub, describes it as “Tintin goes to Innsmouth.” Set in 1930s America, encyclopedia salesman Wadsworth Zane, who suffers from anxiety and compulsive behaviors, discovers that his recently-deceased great-uncle has left him something in his will. This brings him to Broodhollow, “Town of a Thousand Holidays” to claim it. There, he meets various quirky townfolk and comes to believe that something is very wrong with the town… It’s a horror story, but the cartoonish 1930s style, the comic tone and Zane’s good nature take the edge off. Of course, then, when things do get scary it’s even more shocking, but so far, to me, the scariest moment in the series was completely non-violent.

One of the aforementioned quirky townfolk is Iris Bellweather, daughter of one of the executors of Zane’s great-uncle’s will and one of Zane’s first friends in town. She wears this cute outfit, which I always thought made her look like a Girl Scout. Well, the lace and patterns are my own embellishment, but now I’m coloring with Photoshop everything has to have a pattern. Plus, I figured out a way to do lace easily… more on that next week. The skirt pattern is from flashtuchka’s Vintage Floral Patterns and the shirt pattern is from Pixels & Ice Cream.

In any case, it reminds me of poor damned Linnetta, possibly because of the pale vermilion and sunburst yellow. (How impossible is that dress, too? Paperdolls 2, real life 0. Still one of my favorites, improbable or no.) In my imagination, she and her sisters are still bound to the Devil, and he’s never short of jobs for them. She can wear this, then, but I doubt it would give her much pleasure anymore.

Oops! I forgot to note down the colors I used for today’s dress, and yesterday’s too, and now the pencils are all put away… Let’s see — black, pale vermilion, poppy red, sunburst yellow, yellowed orange, cream, non-photo blue, Copenhagen blue, dark umber, bronze. I think. Forgive me, I am still out of practice…

I don’t know about you, but I am tremendously sick of wedding dresses. That’s one of the two problems I have when I do theme weeks: first, I get sick of the subject, second, I feel like I want to make every day better than the one before. It’s not necessarily a good combination. I do feel, though, like I’ve got the desire to play around with the white gel pen out of my system, though. I haven’t even been able to bring myself to finish the veil from Friday’s, and I missed a day for the first time since I started again, because I wasn’t feeling well Saturday. Well, this week, there will be color! Lots of color! But for today, a replacement black-and-white mermaid outfit. So let us say instead, there will be color! lots of color! tomorrow! Or color this and post it yourself, and you can provide me with color for a day.

It does occur to me that this style of top works rather poorly on this doll shape if you actually cut it out… I’m sorry, I don’t have time to try to fix it tonight. I’ll think about it a little more, though.

One benefit of the theme weeks is that I do enjoy putting up the polls afterward…
