Today, we have a March birthday gown; the birthstone is aquamarine and the birth flower is the daffodil. I always like doing these, but I have an uncomfortable feeling that in all these months I’ve been drawing them, I’ve skipped a couple of months entirely… I had better make a chart sometime.

“What do you think you’ll do today?” my husband asked me.
“Oh, a March paperdoll.”
“Like the Ides of March?”
“Well, not that kind of March.”
Please do refrain from getting backstabbed in this dress, the blue is far too nice to spoil!

I think I have pretty much recovered from being so horribly sick, so I’ll do my best to get back on the paperdoll schedule! (True, today’s is a little late, but where I am, it’s 10:30. That’s not even approaching midnight! Plenty of time.)

  1. I picked the first 3 daffodils from the garden yesterday-the dress is a perfect celebration of the month and the flower!

  2. My birthday is soon, so I will pretend this dress is an early birthdaypresent! It is lovley! And it is good that you are feeling better! I only wish we had flowers growing outside this time of year, but the only thing we have is between one and two meter snow. So the dress for me is more like a summer dress, but it is still wonderful, and it brings light and good thougths to my mind.
I have a question, too! I have never heard of birthstones and birth flowers, what is that? Where does it come from? Well, I suppose that is more than one question…

  3. This dress is so…so…spring-y! Still snowing up here, so I think this is a great dress to have stuck in my mind.
And I’m glad you’re better, Liana!!

  4. Glad to hear you are feeling better. This is one of the loveliest dresses I’ve ever seen and a wonderful surprise on today, my birthday. :)

  5. The only months that you are missing are April, July and August. You made a March dress last year but as March is my birth month, you can’t have too many dresses. As always your work is superb. Glad your feeling better.

  6. Min-Chan: Birth stones and flowers are an old tradition. For birthstones there are 4 types: traditional, modern, mystical, and ayurvedic. The idea is based on stones containing mystical powers and being associated with astrological symbols. In modern times of course it’s more of a marketing ploy.

Birth flowers are associated with the tradition of flowers as symbols and arose in much the same manner as birthstones.

I’ll assume that you’re Oriental (based on your name, if not I apoligize), so you might be aware of some of the oriental symbolism associated with stones and flowers. It’s very much like that, except someone a long time ago decided to associate them with the zodiac as well.

  7. Thanks, Sara! I think i understand a bit more now! But still, what is it that makes aquamarine birthstone for march? Same question about the flower! And no, I am not Oriental, Min-Chan is just a nickname. Actually, I am from Sweden. But donĀ“t worry, I take no offence! But enough about me! Thanks again, and I hope for more answers!
And thanks to you, Liana! Your dress teaches me some new things!

  8. Hi! I absolutely ADORE your outfits. :)
Can you make anything Harry Potter-like?
IDk how to do it, so maybe you can give me an idea. :)
    Thanks!

  9. WOW Liana!!! This is AMAZING!!! I WANT IT!!!! Thanx again for the recipe, still haven’t gotten around to making it, but I will as soon as we get the ingredients…

  10. Unfortunately my book about birthstones, rocks, and mysticism is in a box, in my storage shed, otherwise I could read it again for more info. Like the zodiac, stones have personality attributes associated with them, so I would assume aquamaries have attibutes in common with Marchy people. That’s the technical term, just so you know ;)
