Princesses of Sweet Rhyme and Pure Reason’s White Gown and Crown from The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

I reread one of my favorite books,The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, the other day. I love it because I always notice something new every time I read it. This time around it was the bells on the Soundkeeper’s dress — I should like to paperdoll her outfit now, but I’m not really in the mood to draw a million little bells tonight. As you see, I was in the mood for something much easier, which is the dress that Rhyme and Reason wear. Since they wear about the same thing, the dress can be for either of them. Make Sylvia Rhyme and Iris Reason, or the other way around, as you please.

Don’t forget, I’m liveblogging (or as Eleanor has it, live-dolling) the Oscars this Sunday. I figure that will consist of drawing red carpet dresses until my fingers drop off. To get everyone in an Oscar mood, let’s have an Oscar poll. Check out the Costume Design nomination information if you need a refresher.

  1. (Hey, cool! You used my made-up phrase!) I’ll send some prosthetic fingers–yanno, just in case. I look forward to it. The only reason I ever watch the Oscars is for the fashion trainwrecks and pretty dresses, so you’ve just capitalized on my favourite part of it.

I love this dress. ‘The Phantom Tollbooth’ was one of my favourite books when I was younger, and this absolutely looks like a dress that the Princesses would wear. All classic simplicity–just like Rhyme and Reason. Excessively ornate is fun and pretty, but so is simplicity.

  2. Ya, I waited until 11:30 and made sure I gave you some additional colors on the wiki dress. I love the simple dresses on Rhyme and Reason. And the dog was my favorite character. I just loved the book, and did not realize how deep the book was until years later.

  3. Thanks Janel, I really like how this one turned out even though it started as a “I don’t want to draw tonight and need this to be done quickly” dress ;)

Eleanor, I love the made-up phrase… everyone’s going to be live blogging but there will just be ONE live doller. The Fug Girls might be funny but I bet they can’t draw ;) And yeah… I’m praying for someone to pull a Bjork this year, although I doubt it’ll happen.

Fibrowitch, same here — I got part of the book when I was a kid and then more as an adult. It was only a few years ago that I thought “Officer Shrift is… short! short shrift! and he doesn’t listen to anyone! I get it!” :)
