Colorblock Mini Dress (inspired by the Metafilter colors) with White Go-Go Boots

Hello Mefites! Wow, this very well may cure me of just abandoning my site for a few weeks…

Anyways, for those of you who aren’t Metafilter readers, it’s a community blog for the “best of the web,” and someone posted a very thorough writeup of my paperdoll blog. Metafilter being no trifling little site, my traffic has gone something like this: plodplodplodplodWHEEEEEEEEE. I’ll post a picture later.

For those of you just arriving, I thought I’d point out some of my favorites that the writeup didn’t mention:
I did twenty outfits for my Halloween Costume Series, some of which are my favorite things that I’ve ever drawn. (My mom really likes the first one, the Good Queen’s Ghost, but she wants to give it a good washing.)

One of my mermaids was linked to from the Metafilter post, but there are many more. My favorite, of course, is the wedding mermaid, although she throws people searching for mermaid-style wedding dresses for a loop.

For some reason, my drawings of Princess Garnet’s white gown and Princess Ashe’s Wedding Dress (from FFIX and FFXII, respectively) both turn up very high in a Google image search for either of the two characters; Ashe’s wedding dress is my site’s single most popular image. I’m glad, then, that they turned out reasonably well, unlike Cloud’s dress, which I will probably redo before the end of the year.

I have been known to do nice things for people who link to me. Hint, hint.

This is just the tip of the paperdoll iceberg; I have a whole other series of paperdolls from earlier in my life. (The Boutique paperdolls that I’ve been putting up are even older than that, too…)

Thank you for visiting, and I hope you enjoy the site!

  1. I was sooo excited to stumble across your site, it made me feel exactly the way I did when I was a kid and used to get paper dolls on my Bunty comic XD!

    Yay! Beautiful work :)

  2. It’s cool you’re getting more traffic. I’ve always enjoyed this site. Your shading on white is quite amazing and is something I can’t seem to quite master (and a lot of poor paper dolls have suffered because of it). Any chance of a tutorial sometime? Please?

  3. Hi RLC, I was thinking of this comment as I drew the outfit for Friday… Actually I find whites a little frustrating, so I’m tickled to hear “amazing” applied to it ;) I’ll put up a tutorial sometime soon, though, thanks for the idea. Do you use Prismacolors too?

  4. Yeah, I have a couple different types of pencils, but my nicest ones are Prismacolors- not a full 120 set. I’m slowly working my way there through incremental means. I have a few dozen left before I get to the full 120.

  5. Well, just off the top of my head, when I think “grey” using Prismacolors I think of the full range of grey colors available — that is, the 90%, 70%, 50%, 30%, 20% and 10% of one grey color range. The one I like best is French Grey, which is the one I did Friday’s nightgown with, because it’s a nice rich grey and it works the best with the blender for me. (Come to think of it, I’m missing French Grey 20% and get really grumpy about it every time I remember.) So I use all of them (well, not usually 90%) to layer on the grey. You’re right, I’ll put up a tutorial, it’s hard to describe :)

It’s hard to believe I’ve had my set for so long — must be longer than 10 years now. I got the full set at once, Mom waited until there was a 50% off coupon from Michael’s. There’s a core group of maybe twenty-five pencils I go through like mad (Tuscan Red, Black, the middle range of French Greys and so on), maybe about fifty I’ve had to replace a couple of times, and the rest are originals that I just use a little bit or not at all. (The neon colors and the metallics, especially, remain just about pristine. They look great on paper, but middling scanned and I never did experiment much with them…)
